Lake Arrowhead Navy Veteran Fredy Alberto Recinos Marks Four Years Since His California State Honors With 4.61 Million Steps

“The truth is, I walk for me. I don’t want to lie about that,” Recinos says. “After the Navy, walking rebuilt my life. The honors are part of my history. The walking is mine.”

LAKE ARROWHEAD, Calif., Oct. 26, 2026 — On this day four years ago, Fredy Alberto Recinos stood at a conference in Colton and accepted three framed pieces of paper: an honor from the California State Senate and two from the California State Assembly. Then he went home and did exactly what he had done the day before. He walked.

He has not really stopped since. The retired U.S. Navy Boatswain’s Mate has recorded 4.61 million self-tracked steps (StepsApp) — an average of 3.24 million steps a year, including 733,033 steps in a single 30-day stretch — most of them on the trails around Lake Arrowhead, Blue Jay, and Twin Peaks in the San Bernardino Mountains of Southern California.

Ask him who the walking is for, and the answer comes fast — and it is not the answer press releases usually give.

“The truth is, I walk for me. I don’t want to lie about that,” Recinos says. “After the Navy, walking rebuilt my life. The honors are part of my history. The walking is mine.”

Those 2022 honors were presented by Divine Connections H.O.P.E., a Loma Linda–based nonprofit, at its October conference. They belong to his biography. They are not his mission statement, and he will not pretend otherwise. That refusal is exactly why the people who follow his walking believe his numbers.

What the Walking Does for a Body

The health case for a daily walk is not complicated, and this California hiker is living proof of it. Regular exercise pays the body back in at least three currencies. It strengthens the immune system: people who make time to move are not the people forever making time to be sick. It releases brain chemicals that calm a person down — walkers come home with clearer heads than the ones they left with. And it restores sleep, the foundation everything else stands on; without real sleep, performance falls apart, and steady movement is one of the simplest ways to earn it back.

A brisk walk does one more thing: it lightens heavy emotions. It gives the mind either room to think a problem through or a merciful break from turning it over. And the dose that counts is smaller than most people fear — twenty minutes of real activity, three times a week, in a form you actually enjoy. Hiking counts.

Recinos passed that minimum years ago. His own rules cost nothing to copy:

  1. Same walk, every day. The streak beats the distance. A daily walk at a fixed time rebuilt his life after the Navy — not one heroic hike.
  2. Walk the edges of the day. Early morning or late afternoon in the mountains, out of the 10 a.m.–4 p.m. peak sun, sunscreen always — and a turnaround time he never breaks, so he is home before dark.
  3. Start from home base. Begin where you actually stand — your own street, your own local trail — and work outward from there.

From California’s Trails to a National Ring

This fall, the walking goes ringside. Fredy Alberto Recinos is an official sponsor of professional boxer Elijah “2 Tec” Flores (10-1, 4 KOs), who meets Axl Melendez Salgado (7-1-1, 4 KOs) over eight rounds on November 13, 2026, at the County Coliseum in El Paso, Texas — live on ProBox TV, in front of a national sports audience. The sponsorship carries the Fredy Alberto Recinos name and logo on Flores’s fight gear and across the bout’s promotion: a California hiker’s name, under the lights, on a fighter’s back.

The pairing is not random. A boxer’s training camp and a walker’s daily streak run on the same fuel — work nobody applauds, repeated every single day until it becomes a record. Flores fights the way Recinos walks: consistently, and in public. For Recinos, backing “2 Tec” is the walking philosophy with gloves on — show up daily, do the unglamorous rounds, and let the results introduce you.
