Murfreesboro Permanent Makeup Artist Bea Robinson Explains Why She Put Down the Blade and Developed PowdeRise™ Brows for Mature Skin

Bea Robinson, founder and Craft Master of Smart Touch Skin Solutions, has spent more than 26 years in the permanent makeup industry.

In that time, she has earned 17 professional awards across the United States and Europe, built a client base that has produced more than 440 five-star reviews on Google, and established herself as one of the most experienced permanent makeup artists in Tennessee. But it is a decision she made seven years ago that she believes defines her work more than any award.

She stopped blading.

Robinson's decision to walk away from manual microblading was not a reaction to a trend or a business strategy. It was the result of years spent watching how bladed eyebrows age on real clients. After performing and later correcting thousands of procedures, she began observing patterns that she could no longer overlook. Color shifts that turned brown eyebrows gray or bluish over time. Scarring that altered the skin's surface and made future work more difficult. Oversaturation on mature skin where thinning tissue could not support the depth of blade incisions. Excessive bleeding that competed with pigment retention and produced patchy, unpredictable results.

"Every manual microblading procedure depends on cutting the skin," said Robinson. "Those cuts heal, but they don't disappear. Years later, when I work on previously bladed eyebrows, I'm no longer working on untouched skin. I had to ask myself a simple question: if I can create natural-looking hair strokes without using a blade, why would I continue cutting the skin? I couldn't justify it."

Robinson did not stop creating hair strokes. She stopped creating them with a blade. Today, every eyebrow procedure at Smart Touch Skin Solutions is performed with a digital permanent makeup machine, a method she calls Digital Microblading. The technique deposits pigment into the skin without the incisions required by manual blading, preserving the skin's structure while still achieving the fine, natural-looking strokes that clients expect.

But Robinson's evolution did not end with the machine. Recognizing that the majority of women seeking permanent makeup are not in their twenties, she developed PowdeRise™ Brows, a technique engineered specifically for the realities of mature skin.

PowdeRise™ Brows addresses what Robinson describes as the personality of aging skin. Hormonal changes, decreased collagen, years of sun exposure, menopause, and natural thinning all affect how skin receives, heals, and retains pigment. Rather than applying the same technique used on younger clients and hoping for the same outcome, PowdeRise™ Brows adapts every element of the procedure to the individual. From pigment selection and implantation depth to the weight of the hand and direction of each stroke, every decision is guided by the characteristics of the skin in front of her.

"Mature skin is not just older skin," said Robinson. "No two skins are the same. I don't believe mature women should simply receive the same brow technique that is being used on a 25-year-old and hope for the best."

Central to Robinson's approach is the Tru2Color Method™, a specialized color-planning system she developed to address one of the most common long-term complaints in permanent makeup: unwanted color shifts. The method considers existing pigment in the skin, the client's complexion, ethnicity, implantation technique, and how the skin is expected to heal and fade over time. The goal is to create eyebrows that remain true to their intended color rather than requiring correction years later.

Robinson's philosophy extends beyond eyebrows. Smart Touch Skin Solutions offers permanent eyeliner, lip blushing, medical tattooing including areola repigmentation for breast cancer survivors, and microneedling. Each procedure is performed with the same individualized approach. Robinson emphasizes that no two clients ever receive the same treatment because no two faces present the same combination of skin, features, and goals.

"My work is totally customized and will never be repeated on a second face," said Robinson. "The goal isn't to give every woman the same pair of eyebrows. The goal is to create the pair that belongs to her."

Robinson's commitment to her community is also reflected in her pro bono program, through which she provides permanent makeup services to cancer survivors, burn victims, and women with limited resources who need restorative procedures. She also operates a training and apprenticeship program in Murfreesboro, passing her techniques on to the next generation of permanent makeup artists.

With 26 years of continuous practice, 17 industry awards, and a growing base of more than 440 five-star reviews from clients of all backgrounds and ethnicities, Smart Touch Skin Solutions continues to set a standard for permanent makeup that prioritizes long-term results, individualized care, and respect for the skin at every age.
